Educational Advocacy

Are you having difficulty getting special educational support for your child in the school setting?
Has the school told you your child does not qualify for an IEP?
Are your child’s grades dropping and you feel like you’re doing most of the work to keep them from failing?
...You may benefit from an educational advocate.
Resources
First, I strongly recommend that families research whether these services are available for free in their area.
- If you are in Miami, FL you can reach out to Parent to Parent of Miami. https://www.ptopmiami.org/
- If you are in a state that has a Parent to Parent branch, you may be able to find services there. https://www.p2pusa.org/parents/
- If you live in Michigan, reach out to this free resource: https://mikids1st.org/

How can I help you with the IEP/504 process?
- I guide you along the process, helping you to know your rights and how to communicate with the school that ensures that they complete the appropriate steps – evaluation, meeting, setting up accommodations. This is typically one meeting to discuss, but can be follow-up meetings as needed.
- I meet with you to get a feel for your child’s needs in the school setting, their strengths and weaknesses academically, behaviorally, socially and emotionally. If your child is older than 13 I usually like to include them in this process to give them buy-in to the supports to be included in school.
- I review results of psychological testing to figure out what might be helpful to add as supports in the classroom.
- I attend IEP meetings with you to ensure that your child’s needs are prioritized in the process.
